Made in Portugal circa late 18th century

After the devastating earthquake that destroyed most of Lisbon in 1755, the Marquis de Pombal was mainly responsible for the rebuilding of the city.   Tile production went into full swing.   This very rare collection of antique tiles comes from that period and belongs to Mr. Norman Karlson, author of books on American tiles.   We have about 350 total pieces of these 2 patterns.   Notice the shading on the leaves and pedals, this is important when setting these tiles.   Last photo shows a design idea with mixed Portuguese tiles.
