Batchelder Celtic Rosette Tile

On May 7, 2011, in American Tiles, by nancy

Batchelder, Los Angeles, CA  1909-1932

This deep-relief molded tile is a splendid example of Batchelder’s genius.  The Medieval-inspired Celtic rosette motif is decorated in blue and plum engobe in the recesses on a buff ground.  This tile is illustrated as No. 302 in a period catalogue.  The dimensionality of the rosette is striking and is complemented by the highly naturalistic design and lustrous patina.
