Prior to founding CALCO (California Clay Products), Rufus Keeler formed his own company in 1917 and called it Southern California Clay Products. In 1923, Keeler reincorporated and the company became known as CALCO. He functioned as plant manager and head ceramist and was involved in every aspect of production. This is one of his very early and rare art tile pieces, a double sconce with a Spanish mission scene. In his early work, the glaze colors are richer, brighter and more organic. This exceptional piece has 9 matte glazes and was drilled at the factory for hanging. Quite a collector’s item!
