Grueby Pottery, So. Boston, MA 1894-1919
In the last quarter of the 19th century Boston moved into a position of national artistic importance. William H. Grueby established his business and produced architectural ceramics and art pottery that epitomized the American Arts and Crafts movement. This exquisite piece has their wonderful matte green glazing with horizontal raised leaves. It comes from Norman Karlson’s personal collection. Mr. Karlson has an extensive collection of antique tile and art pottery and is most known for his books on American art tiles.
