Muresque Tiles, Oakland, CA  1925-1934

William F. Muir was born in Scotland in 1886 and settled in Fresno, CA in 1913.    However, in 1925 he moved his family to Oakland and founded his tile company.   Inspired by Batchelder and Claycraft, his tiles have that dusty natural feel, and picture scenic California landscapes as well as sailing ships and medieval depictions.   This vintage tile is deeply molded and features a Spanish-style patio scene with all the fine detailing one would expect from this great company.    Soft muted glazes compliment the tile as well as the self-framing border.
