American Encaustic Tiling Co., Zanesville, OH    1875-1935

This is a superlative, high-relief tile depicting a Foo dog bordered by  a graceful swirl of peonies and bracketed at each corner with a linear geometric motif.   Foo dogs are the ancient guardians of Buddhist teples.  Peonies are highly prized for their exquisite beauty and are symbols of nobility and spring, are are known as the ‘king of flowers.’  The polychrome glazing in shades of cinnabar, goldenrod, celadon and cobalt blue is a triumph of the art.
