Van Briggle, Colorado Springs, CO 1901-2012
Artus Van Briggle was an American artist of Dutch descent and had already earned a reputation as a highly accomplished painter in Europe. In addition, he had worked as a ceramic artist and sculptor at Rookwood from 1887-1893 and during that time also experimented with glazes. Van Briggle founded his eponymous pottery in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1899. They are still active and Van Briggle Pottery & Tile has the distinction of being one of the oldest continuing art potteries in the United States. Van Briggle pottery and tile is known for their fluid, naturalistic designs and rich, matte glazes, in particular the signature “dead matte” glaze. Van Briggle tiles are rare and are among the most distinctive of the American Arts and Crafts movement.
