Arequipa Pottery, Fairfax, CA  1911-1918

This small pottery started as therapy for tuberculosis patients in a sanitarium and had employed such skilled ceramists as Frederick H. Rhead and Louis M. Solon.  Many pieces were hand thrown and had outstanding glazes.  This low bowl is a terrific example of their fine workmanship.   The vertical pattern, resembling leaves, continues up the sides and over the top edge, which folds inward.  This is a beautiful hand-made piece with matte glazing.
