Grueby Pottery, So. Boston, MA  1894-1919

The output of the Grueby Pottery  is among the most desirable of the American Art Pottery movement.  William Henry Grueby apprenticed with the J. & J.G. Low Art Tile Works before forming his own company.  In addition to its superlative pottery pieces, the company produced a variety of wonderful decorative and architectural tiles with their distinctive and prized glazes.   According to Norman Karlson’s research, the company introduced its first matte green glaze in 1897.  It became the rage of the art pottery world and many pottery makers tried to imitate it.  Grueby received awards all over the world .  The plant was eventually sold to C. Pardee Works of Perth Amboy, NJ.
