Woolenius Tile Company, Berkeley, CA  1927-1939

Many Woolenius tile designs were copies of other tile makers, which was a common practice.   The owner, Charles Elsenius, competed with well-established tile makers by producing handmade tiles at lower prices.  The tiles had a rustic aesthetic with signs of technical flaws that were charming yet showed their weakness. Here is a lovely vintage tile with a woodland scene.  Nice details include a stone wall, winding road and trees.   Self framed with matte blue glazing.  We have a 2nd tile with different glazing, listed separately.

8″ x 6″ x 5/8″ thick
