Pewabic Pottery, Detroit, MI  1903-present

Ella Peters (1901-1994) was employed at Pewabic Pottery as founder Mary Chase Stratton’s assistant/secretary.  When she retired in 1969 after 30 years with the company, she and her husband Ira, using original molds and glaze formulas, continued to make pieces out of their home.  This relief tile was created by Pewabic for the American Blower Company.  It depicts a little girl in a charming dress blowing out a candle.  Embossed with inscriptions “A Little Blower” and “American Blower Company, it is finished with a rich, sand colored vellum glaze.  The American Blower Company of Detroit manufactured industrial fans for Detroit’s auto factories.  This tile is shown in Norman Karlson’s Encyclopedia of American Art Tile, Region 3, page 242.
