CALCO (California Clay Products), So. Gate, CA  1923-1932

California Clay Products, or CALCO, was one of the most marvelous tile makers in the country.  There were many styles that were produced, such as deeply molded rectangular tiles of cranes, peacocks, trees or missions that were either glazed in one color or several.  Another style was high-lined tile of medallions or Moresque style decoration glazed in multi colors.  There were fireplace surrounds, wainscoting, step risers, wall inserts and framed tile wall hangings. This was all the creation of Rufus Keeler, who worked for Carnegie Brick & Pottery, Gladding McBean, California China Products before forming his own company in Vernon, Southern California Clay Products. Then in 1923, he incorporated with CALCO as a trademark and built a new factory in the LA suburb of South Gate.
