S & S (Solon & Schemmel) Tile Company, San Jose, CA  1921-1936

Albert Solon (1887-1949) made beautiful, high-end tiles that adorn many buildings on the west coast, such as Hearst Castle, Steinhart Aquarium, Orpheum Theatre etc.  This outstanding vintage tile depicts a landscape scene with trees and mountains.  Very 3-dimensional with a hand made feel, rounded uneven edges and matte brown glazing.   One of the best S & S tiles we have had!
