Made in Holland    circa 1700’s

The Dutch were prolific in tile making as early as the 16th century.   The ubiquitous blue on white, decorated corners and simple motifs result in wonderful and collectible tiles.   Scenes of daily life, animals, birds, flowers, soldiers, children playing games are depicted on these charming tiles. We have a large quantity of Dutch tiles amassed by Norman Karlson who traveled the world collecting antique tiles.  His books are focused on American Art tiles, but he is very knowledgable when it comes to tiles made in other countries.    Here is one of his tiles which depicts a man with a bow and arrows on horseback.  “Spiders heads” decorate the corners.
