This is a rare and interesting tile modeled and signed by the noted Newcomb designer and decorator, Leona Nicholson. The base is marked with the hand-built cipher "H", "B" and "N" for Newcomb Pottery. The inscription reads "Paul Morphy Chess Player" and honors the famous American chess prodigy known as the greatest chess master of his time. Bright glaze in muted wash of buff, emerald and crimson complements the medieval-inspired design.
